They had a huge following here in Australia in the 1960's/1970's and into the 1980's and then, as fashions do, faded off a bit.  Having said that, most of those who purchased a pair during their original hey-day, still wore them 'but in secret' because 'once you step into them, you can never step out of them'.  But it became a sort of fashion 'taboo' to wear them in public in Australia.  In the 1990's, the humble ugg boot underwent a revival, this time led by overseas businesses hoping to cash in on the whole scene.  From 2002, fashion designers around the world decided it was time to really give sheepskin products a huge push by promoting clothes made out of faux sheepskin. Yes - a bit sad - most of this fashion clothing is not made from real sheepskin because of the expensive nature of it. (In recent years, major sheep farming countries have undergone extended droughts which have limited the amount of skin product available).  So-called imitation fur has complicated things a little as 'fake' or faux fur footwear have also begun appearing on the scene.  Whilst they may look the part, fake sheepskin footwear just don't last the distance.  The only solution is to buy real, genuine sheepskin footwear.  Now in 2003, even the Aussies are back to wearing their ugg boots in public. And so, completes the full fashion cycle for the Australian sheepskin boot!

We just happen to promote several types of fashion sheepskin footwear:

  1. The US Ugg Australia ones which, by comparison is relatively new to the sheepskin footwear world.  We have been informed by a representative of Ugg Australia (12 Dec 2003) that none of their styles of footwear is now made in Australia.  A portion is made in New Zealand and most is made in China.  This will no doubt change as new contracts come and go.
  2. The Australian UGGS-N-RUGS™ brand. UGGS-N-RUGS are a manufacturer and retailer of sheepskin footwear for more than 25 years.  By buying a pair of fashion footwear from UGGS-N-RUGS, you are living part of the legend of this product.
  3. The Australian Binder Productions make who are another ridgy didge, Australian manufacturer of over a decade who manufacture, retail and wholesale under the label "MADE BY JUMBO UGG BOOTS AUSTRALIA"®.

In Australia, ugg is a generic word and there are many manufacturers.  However, there are very few left from the golden 1960's/1970's era when the ugg boot launched itself onto the surfing fraternity.  UGGS-N-RUGS began during this surfing revolution in Perth, Western Australia where there is world famous beaches and surf.  Check out more on this at our sheepskin footwear history page.

You will notice that the prices of the Australian brands of sheepskin boots are much more attractive than the US ones.  As such, you may have the opportunity to purchase two pairs for a similar price to one!  Why not have a pair in different colours then and really get with the fashion?

Just before I go, I thought it useful to point you to some other places of interest with respect to sheepskin fashion.  Just remember, for links to sites outside ours, we are not responsible for the content, information, or accuracy of them. An aside: For the purpose of discussion, we refer to "sheepskin" but in actual fact, we should be saying "lamb skin" as the actual skins used in the manufacture of both the brands of footwear mentioned above are in fact lamb skins.  In addition, most real sheepskin jackets are actually of shearling or lamb skins.  Lamb skins tend to be softer and of a higher quality.
